Family friendly labour market strategies for employees with family responsibilities

Family-workplace measures may benefit both employers and employees: Beyond giving the individual employee a possibility to combine working and caring in the family, the employer can regard family-friendly measures as a way of attracting and retaining employees. Provision of family-workplace measures can also be used by employers as a strategy for responding to changes in labour market demographics and production methods. Additionally, family friendly policies can be regarded as a way of ensuring employability, and hereby avoiding marginalisation of employed carers. The article addresses whether there are competitive advantages of firms for being actively involved in family-workplace supportive measures, and gives examples of corporate solutions from Europe, Japan, and the US. The article looks at families with children and looks especially working carers of older people.
