The article discuss if and how it is possible to create gender equality in the labour movement. A theoretical framework with inspiration from deconstructivism and pragmatic post-structuralism is introduced. The framework has a twofold goal: to establish a framework for analysis of gender equality strategies and to develop visions of new ways to do gender equality. Focus for the analysis is the Starlet programme in the Danish central organisation LO and the self-organisation strategy in the British union UNISON. The article concludes that UNISON’s gender equality strategy has realised a way to put more transformative remedies for change into practise while the Starlet programme does neither aim at nor practise a transformative strategy. Although UNISON’s strategy is very visionary there is still a lot of problems relating as well to the implementation of the strategy as to whether the strategy is transformative enough. The article builds upon Lise Lotte Hansen’s Ph.D. thesis due to be finished winter 2004.
