The article analyse trends in trade union membership in Europe. Many European trade unions have experience a setback in membership figures during the last twenty years. This is e.g. the case in countries like Germany, Great Britain and France. In other countries like Denmark and Sweden the density level have been quite stable. The article tries to explain differences in level of density using different theoretical and empirical explanations.
