When co-workers have to lead each other
Carl Cato Wadel
This article focuses on changes in the role of co-workers within the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD). The study shows that changes towards a flatter, team-based organisation imply that co-workers have to lead or manage each other to a greater extent. We can speak of a fundamental change towards a more leadership oriented co-worker role. The term co-worker leadership is introduced to capture management or leadership performed by co-workers. Challenges that develop when co-workers have to lead each other are emphasized, and implications of co-worker leadership for our understanding of leadership are discussed. We are forced to develop a more relational perspective of leadership.
