The authors present a theoretical discussion on how to research sustainability in relation to flexible specialisation. They have recently initiated an empirical study of the so called ‘superficial and excessive relations in working life’. Superficial and excessive relations are increasing phenomena in flexible working life. Hence new strains and risks in relation to health and safety are coming up.
Sustainability in relation to flexible specialisation is indicated as an ability of employees and managers to develop social learning in managing and opposing superficial and excessive relations in working life.The authors deal with conceptualisation of the key variables in the problem field and especially to interpret flexible specialisation in societal terms. They also argue for a methodological triangulation combining a quantitative measure of superficial and excessive relations, a qualitative research of the discourse, and an action research approach to social learning in organisations with extreme forms of flexibility.
