Collective countering. Creating critique of neoliberal work on young selves

Jo Krøjer og Camilla Hutters

The overall notion of Danish youth choosing their education is that this is a free and independent choice made by the individual, young person. On a closer look however, this freedom of choice seems to be intensely regulated throughout the years and today. This regulation exposes a neoliberal discourse that favours individuality and individual success, and offers different technologies to initiate young people to work on their selves in order to consider the right choice for their education. In a research project inspired equally by action research and post structuralism, we collaborated with groups of youngsters in order to create a means to counter the way neoliberal regulation subjectivizes young people. The main idea was to let young people work collectively with their experiences and reflections on choosing an education and thus create both a different and non-individual way to possible clarification, as well as an opportunity to investigate the potential of collectiveness as a way to counter neoliberal work on the self. Presenting some of the stories and reflections created collectively by the young people we discuss to which extent they are resisting the tempting promises of individualised, neoliberal success.
