From gender segregation to equality
Backwards and forwards
The Scandinavian labour markets are cha-racterised by af high
degree of gender se-gregation. Women and men dominate in different trades,
occupations, and work functions. Is that the primary reason why women and men do
also have unequal working conditions? If that is the case, should the strategy
for real equality then imply a higher degree of gender integration in working
life? The article discusses the relations between the horizontal and the
vertical gender segregation at work on the basis of examples from the last 100
years of development in the Scandinavian labour markets.
