Working identities of young adults
Birgitte Simonsen og Noemi Katznelson
The article explores various new tendencies in the working identities of young adults in Denmark. It builds upon four different empirical researches, which we have carried out during the last 10 years; 1) A research focusing on young adults in general and their relations to work, breadwinning, familylife etc. 2) A research among university students and their expectations of their future study 3) A research among young creative unemployed, and finally 4) A research among the very weak young unemployed primarily in Denmark but also in other European countries. The article describes, how young adults from the four different empirical settings carry very similar and high expectations of their future working life – although the young people have very different experiences and objective possibilities both in the educational system and on the labour market. The different researches reveal interesting insight into the various working identities of the young and show that – despite the similarities in their expectations of work – their actual abilities to realise their expectations are very different.
