Unemployment Policy and Workfare

Jens Lind og Iver Hornemann Møller

The change from passive to active unem-ployment policies has been a significant feature in European and Danish labour market policy during the 1990s. Although unemployment policy always has had elements of activating the unemployed – also called workfare – the importance of such policies has increased. The article analyses unemployment policy since the 1970s in the context of labour market and welfare policies and offers insight into the economic, social and political developments that have fostered the increase in activation policies in Denmark.
