The article has two problematics. First of all, some of the dilemmas involved in the development of nursing and taking care of older people, as these are experienced by the staff in the carecenters, are revealed. And secondly, there is a discussion of the necessity of the staff obtaining more influence and a higher degree of co-responsibility concerning the development going on in the carecenters.
Referring to contemporary, and mainly Scandinavian, research on nursing and taking care of older people some of the experiences drawn from a project called »Absence and Presence« are discussed. This is a project to further job development in four carecenteres in Copenhagen which has just been concluded.
Founded on their evaluation of the project the authors give an account of how, in these carecenters, people were handling the antagonisms and the dilemmas involved in the caring of elders. And some of the learning experiences gained through the project are discussed.
