The Factory Community
Brede Textile Mill 1880-1930

Is it possible to combine social and economic interests? The article
describes the paternalistic relationship between workers and management in
factory communities of the ninteenth century. The empirical area is a textile
mill north of Copenhagen, Brede Klædefabrik, which existed from 1831-1956. It
possessed a wide range of philanthropic institutions for the workers and showed
personal bonds between the employees and the owner, but also clash of cultures,
social and political conflicts.
