The Factory Community

Brede Textile Mill 1880-1930

Lykke Lafarque Pedersen

Is it possible to combine social and economic interests? The article describes the paternalistic relationship between workers and management in factory communities of the ninteenth century. The empirical area is a textile mill north of Copenhagen, Brede Klædefabrik, which existed from 1831-1956. It possessed a wide range of philanthropic institutions for the workers and showed personal bonds between the employees and the owner, but also clash of cultures, social and political conflicts.
